Folklore is prevalent within every culture of the world and encompasses a variety of aspects of life to include celebrations, stories, art, and food. Some of these folkloric traditions also combine different folklore types. One such tradition is wassailing, which hails from the United Kingdom, and incorporates food, music, and gatherings. There are several wassailing traditions, but one of the most unique is one that is found in Wales: the Mari Lwyd. Like other wassailing traditions, it takes place during Christmastime. However, it has an entirely different aspect: a horse’s skull draped with cloth.
